Between 1987 and 1995 I lived, variously, at 1129a 65th Street (behind my landlords' house 1129 65th Street), 1115 65th Street, (next door to 1129 65th St.) and 1133 and 1/2 65th Street (a former crack house one house down from 1129 65th Street). My landlords had bought the whole suite of houses from the city of Oakland for $54,000 dollars. What impressed me about this was not how cheap the houses were (they were clearly worth only about $54,000 all together) but how my anyone in that part of town came up with that much money.
These addresses were in Oakland rather than in the closely adjoining municipalities of Berkeley or Emeryville, which was a pain when I had to call the police when some whore was getting cut or people were shooting at each other out on San Pablo. Still, the neighborhood had its merits.
